EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE IN DENTAL HYGIENE CARE!
Traditionally, patients visited a dental office to have a cleaning done by a Dental Hygienist and an examination done by a Dentist. However, in almost every province across Canada, Registered Dental Hygienists are able to work independently of Dentists. In British Columbia, the reason that many did not was because the Dental Association (Dentists) had a rule that Hygienists were bound to. It stated that, 'All patients MUST see the dentist for an exam every '365 days' in order to get a cleaning done by a hygienist'. To abide by this rule it made the most sense for Dental Hygienists to work in an office with a Dentist, allowing them to do the required exam.
But, after years of lobbying, we finally did it!! The Minister of Health passed legislation created by our association, granting certain Registered Dental Hygienists an exemption from the '365 Day Rule'. To qualify for this exemption Registered Dental Hygienists had to prove that they hold a higher level of education, that they have a certain number of practising hours and that they hold an advanced first aid/CPR certification.
As of March of 2020, all BC registered dental hygienists are now legally able to provide dental hygiene services to the public independently of a dentist.
